The clutch is one of the most important parts in your car, as it shifts the force generated by your engine to the transmission, which in turn transmits power to the wheels. If your clutch isn’t working, your car won’t move.
Clutches endure a lot of wear and tear, and will ultimately wear out over time. This means that BMWs and Minis occasionally suffer clutch issues. Some of the more common clutch issues that European car owners run into include:
- Unable to put the car into gear
- Inability to shift into certain gears
- Chatter, grinding, rattling, and other noise
- Clutch pedal feels loose and requires little pressure to push down
- Car hesitates after being put into gear
Sooner or later, your clutch will need to be replaced. We have repaired and replaced thousands of clutches since we opened our doors, and have done clutch work on even the most obscure models of BMWs.
Manual and Automatic Transmission Replacement
No matter how well you care for your BMW’s transmission, sooner or later it will begin to fail, simply due to wear and tear over time. Many different issues or symptoms can indicate that your transmission is failing, including:
- Hesitation or resistance when changing gears (in an automatic, you’ll experience this when shifting between drive, park, and reverse)
- Strange noises, such as grinding, clunking, or humming
- Leaking fluids—transmission fluid is typically red and sweet smelling
- Burning smell
- Suddenly slipping out of gear
- Check engine light turning on
Sometimes these issues have simple fixes. But sometimes, they require a full-blown rebuild or replacement of your transmission. We pride ourselves on our honesty and dedication to the long-term well-being of our customers. So if there’s a way for us to perform a long-lasting repair on your transmission, we’ll find a way to make it happen. But we will be honest and upfront with you if replacing your transmission is the only option.
There are many types of car problems that can lead to you looking at this page. Maybe your car isn’t starting. The ‘check engine’ warning refuses to go way. Maybe it’s running rough or keeps overheating. Or maybe you’re stuck in the driveway, because it simply won’t start.
Sometimes, the root of the problem is hard to find. We’ve worked with many customers who have gotten bounced from one shop to the next and paid thousands of dollars, with no improvement or only a temporary fix to show for it. We can get to the bottom of whatever issue is plaguing your BMW or Mini, and get you back on the road.
Sometimes, repair isn’t a realistic option for an engine. It may be too badly damaged—or simply have too many miles on it—for repair to be a financially viable option. In these cases, the best approach is to perform a complete engine replacement.
However, you have a number of options when it comes to engine replacement.
New Engine vs. Rebuilt Engine
For more recent cars, you have the option of going with a brand new engine that has never been used, or a rebuilt engine. But to make that choice, you have to understand what we mean when we talk about ‘rebuilt’ engines.
When an engine is replaced, or when a car is badly damaged in an accident, it’s rare for the engine to be thrown away. Odds are that the engine block itself is in good shape, and that many of the components—pistons, cylinder heads, pumps, rings, valves, plugs, cams, timing chains, crank shafts—are still in good shape. Just throwing the engine away would be a huge waste.
In these cases, a company that specializes in rebuilding engines will take an engine apart, clean it up, replace any parts that are worn or damaged, and put it back together. When an engine is rebuilt by a reputable company, the end result will be in ‘nearly new’ condition, and will be able to run for many, many years. This is why we offer our customers the option of choosing a rebuilt engine, if we believe that the cost savings will justify it, and we can track down a rebuilt engine that will serve you well.
In other instances, a new engine may be a preferable option (or the only option). Our goal is to always be honest with you and to give you the information you need to make a solid, informed choice.
For older models of BMWs and Minis, it may be the case that new engines are not being manufactured, and rebuilt engines are either not in stock or are extremely expensive. When this is the case, the best option may be to install a pre-owned engine that was removed from another car of the same or similar model.
